Detention Without Trial Unacceptable — Delta Governor’s Aide Fires Police Command.
By Henry Ubus.
Asaba, Delta State — The Executive Assistant to the Governor of Delta State on Security and Operations, Engr. Udoka Emmanuel Chika-dibie, MNSE, has strongly condemned the alleged unwarranted arrest and prolonged detention of several residents of the state by the Delta State Police Command.
In a statement made available to journalists, Engr. Chika-dibie expressed deep concern over reports that numerous innocent citizens have been held in detention since Wednesday without being formally charged to court.
He emphasized that such actions run contrary to the principles of justice, fairness, and the rule of law, noting that any individual suspected of committing an offence should be promptly arraigned before a competent court of jurisdiction rather than being subjected to indefinite detention.
The Governor’s aide particularly frowned at the development under the supervision of the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, describing the situation as disappointing, especially considering the officer’s background and experience in public communication and law enforcement.
“Detaining citizens without trial undermines public trust in the police and violates their fundamental human rights. If there is credible evidence against any individual, the proper procedure is to charge them to court without delay,” he stated.
Engr. Chika-dibie further noted that while security agencies must be supported in maintaining law and order, such responsibilities must be discharged within the confines of the law.
He, however, remarked that despite the current situation, he believes the concerned authority is capable of acting appropriately and urged a swift review of the matter to ensure that justice is served.
The statement concluded with a firm call for the immediate release of those unlawfully detained or their prompt arraignment in court, reiterating his total disapproval of the alleged actions.
